- Integral steels are a single forged piece with a brazed carbide tip, which is simple and cheap for shallow holes.
- Threaded rod and bit combinations allow the bit to be reground and the rod reused, which suits deeper or repeated work.
- Shank size has to match the drill's chuck exactly; a hex shank and a round shank are not interchangeable.
- Chisel and cross tips suit different rock structures, and a cross tip holds gauge better in fractured ground.
- Regrinding integral steels restores penetration rate, and the discard limit is the point at which the carbide is too thin to regrind.
