Mains-Powered Light Towers

LED floodlight head

The fitting on its own, as a spare, a retrofit for a halide tower, or a head for a customer's own mast. Specified by flux, beam distribution and protection rating rather than by wattage.

Features

  • Wattage says nothing useful about output; lumens per watt and total flux are the comparison, and good fittings sit well above 120 lm/W.
  • Beam distribution decides whether the fitting lights a strip, a square or a point, and a symmetric flood is the wrong answer for a carriageway.
  • Retrofitting halide towers with LED heads cuts the electrical load by roughly three quarters, but the tower's alternator then runs at very light load.
  • Protection rating is needed on both the housing and the gland, and a good housing with a poor gland fails in the first winter.
  • Colour temperature between 4 000 K and 5 700 K is usual on site; higher figures look brighter and raise glare complaints.
  • Surge protection on the driver is what decides whether the head survives a generator-fed circuit.

Specifications

Figure Typical range Unit Why it matters
Luminous flux 20 000 - 80 000 lm The only honest output comparison.
Efficacy 120 - 160 lm/W Decides electrical load for the same light.
Beam distribution symmetric / asymmetric / narrow Must match strip, area or point lighting.
Protection rating IP 66 Housing and gland both have to meet it.
Colour temperature 4 000 - 5 700 K Affects glare complaints at the same lux.
Surge protection level 4 - 10 kV Governs survival on a generator-fed circuit.
