Features
- Rotary drilling relies on weight on bit and rotation speed rather than percussion, so rig pulldown capacity limits bit selection.
- Roller cone tooth and insert design follows rock compressive strength: milled tooth for soft formations, carbide inserts for hard rock.
- Bearing type, open roller or sealed journal, decides bit life in hot and dusty conditions.
- Flushing volume must clear cuttings at the annular velocity the hole needs, otherwise the bit regrinds its own cuttings.
- Drag bits suit soft, non-abrasive formations and give high penetration at low cost per metre where the ground allows them.
