Cylinders

Single-Acting Cylinders

One port, extending under pressure and returning under load, spring or gravity. Common on tipping gear, jacks, presses and simple lifting frames.

Features

  • Only the extend stroke is powered, so return speed depends on the load and the return line restriction rather than on pump flow.
  • Breathers and drain arrangements matter because the space behind the piston has to breathe as the rod moves.
  • Return speed is controlled at the valve, not the cylinder; a body dropping too fast is a valve metering question.
  • Spring-return versions are limited in stroke and force by the spring, which makes them suited to short clamping duties.
  • Because there is no powered retraction, a stuck cylinder cannot be pulled back hydraulically, which affects how a fault is cleared on site.
