Installation, Commissioning & Repowering
Engine Bed and Alignment Work
Modification or renewal of engine beds and mounting arrangements, and alignment of engine, gearbox and shaft cold and at working temperature.
Features
- Bed modification is designed rather than improvised, because the bed carries thrust and torque reaction into the hull structure.
- Resilient mount selection follows the engine mass, its firing frequency and the vibration limits that apply.
- Alignment is measured with dial gauges to a stated tolerance and recorded, not judged by feel.
- A warm recheck is part of the job, since the engine rises on its mounts as it heats and a cold-only alignment will not hold.
- Chocking, whether steel or resin, is specified with the bed design and affects how the alignment is finally set.
Specifications
| Figure | Typical range | Unit | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bed work scope | new mounting plates, aft section renewed | defines the structural work being done | |
| Mount type | resilient, 4 off | affects vibration transmission and alignment behaviour | |
| Alignment tolerance | 0.05 over the coupling face | mm | the acceptance figure for the work |
| Cold and warm readings | both recorded | mm | proves the alignment holds at working temperature |
| Chocking | resin chocks | decides the final setting method and future re-alignment |
