- Cause of failure is established before fitting a replacement, because oil supply and air filtration cause most turbocharger failures and will destroy the new unit too.
- Cartridge exchange is usually quicker and cheaper than a complete unit where the housings are sound.
- Charge air cooler fouling reduces available power and raises exhaust temperature, and it is often blamed on the engine rather than on the cooler.
- Coolers are cleaned and pressure-tested, and re-tubed where the tube stack is beyond cleaning.
- Seawater-cooled coolers suffer erosion and corrosion at the inlet end first, which is worth inspecting before it leaks.
