Nitrite-Containing Heavy-Duty Coolant
Coolant with nitrite inhibitors for wet-liner diesel engines that need protection against cavitation pitting of the liner outer wall.
Features
- Nitrite forms a protective film on the liner surface where vapour bubbles collapse, which is where cavitation damage begins.
- Inhibitor level is depleted in service and has to be checked and corrected with a supplemental additive rather than left to run down.
- Required by some engine builders and prohibited by others, which makes the manual the deciding document.
- Test strips or a sampling programme are the only way to know the inhibitor level; appearance tells you nothing.
- Not to be mixed with organic acid coolants, because the combination can drop inhibitors out of solution.
